"As a parent it's your job to turn the stones for your child, failing to do so out of fear or misery and heart break is only neglecting your child's best interests. And I can tell you, years down the track the misery and heart break from knowing you neglected your child will hit you twice as hard"
James and Karissa, Isla's parents
Mission for Isla
Isla has a very rare disease called Rasmussens Encephalitis. There are only 500 known cases worldwide, 12 in Australia and Isla is only the second from Tasmania. This disease impacts one hemisphere of the brain, where inflammation progressively destroys brain cells, resulting in multiple seizures, loss of vision, cognitive impairment, hemiparesis and if left untreated, the child could die. The only definitive treatment is a hemispherectomy (which is a disconnection of the right-hand side of her brain). This surgery comes with irreversible consequences, including the possibility that Isla will be vision impaired and partially paralysed. Her family have opted to have the surgery at the beginning of September in Melbourne.
Isla and her family are facing a time of immense challenges, including adapting their house and car to suit a child who may be visually impaired, and partially paralysed, as well as the fact that her parents will not be able to work while they care for Isla and her younger sister, 1 year old Tilly.
Motors has been synonymous with the Holden brand since its purchase of the Chevrolet franchise back in 1922. Motors has been the sole Tasmanian retailer of GM and Holden vehicles since that time and therefore, it seems appropriate that we celebrate the retirement of the Holden brand with a Holden Muster.
The Holden Muster will be held in Hobart from the 3-6th September, and in Launceston, Devonport and Burnie from the 3-5th September and will feature a variety of Holden cars through the ages. Entry will be by donation. Purchase a snag at the Sausage Sizzle on the weekend at participating Motors, knowing you'll get a delicious snack while supporting Isla and her family.
